"The burial of the remains of Bin Laden was done in strict accordance with Islamic precepts and practices," said John Brennan, the top counterterrorism adviser to President Barack Obama.
Washington said bin Laden was thrown into the sea after U.S. forces was killed in a compound near the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, because that was the best option, given the time limit.
Under Islamic tradition, funerals are to be made within 24 hours after death. Moving the body to another country could have taken a long time, officials said. THE OTHER
News of the burial at sea immediately provoked outrage and raised the possibility of a backlash despite the apparent care that put the U.S. in giving the last rites.
A leading imam of Egypt, Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb, said the United States violated Islamic customs by not burying ground Bin Laden, an act that was seen as a U.S. attempt to prevent that his resting place became a holy place for extremists.
Islamic lawyer Montasser al-Zayat said that Bin Laden should have been buried in his native Saudi Arabia, home to Islam's holiest sites.

In the U.S., some questioned why the man responsible for the attacks of 11 September 2001 that killed nearly 3,000 people had to be buried with such respect.
"I was a Navy doctor and if my command had asked me to read a passage from the Koran on the guy, I have been nausea and malaise and had not done it," said Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, a Muslim who heads the American Islamic Forum for Democracy.

Muslims usually bury their dead in tombs standing on earth and accept the burial at sea only in cases in which the body can be preserved intact on board a ship until it reaches land.
Brennan said the U.S. government had not determined whether to publish a picture of the corpse of Bin Laden and it was unclear who made public the video of the funeral.
The body was transported to the U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, which led to his final resting place in a site of the northern Arabian Sea. Preparations for the funeral began at 01.10 hours U.S. Eastern (0510 GMT) and ended 50 minutes later. His body was thrown overboard in an elevator of the boat.
"The body was placed in a bag weight. An army officer read out a prepared religious quotations that were translated into Arabic by a native speaker, "the U.S. official.
